Remedial Investigations, Risk Assessments & Cleanup


     Mark Yinger Associates prepares risk-based corrective action plans to reduce exposure risk to humans and organisms through contaminant cleanup and/or through implementing engineered and institutional controls. 

     We have perfomed remedial investigations, risk assessments and cleanups at: sawmills, manufacturing facilities, smelters, metal fabrication and coating facilities, industrial landfills, bulk petroleum storage facilities, service stations, drycleaners, wrecking yards, agricultural chemical storage facilities, and agricultural lands.

     A remedial investigation of a contaminated site involves defining the source of the contaminants and determining the extent to which these contaminants have migrated into the soil, groundwater, surface water, sediments, and soil vapor.

     Mark Yinger Associates can quickly and accurately characterize the geology, hydrogeology, and hydrology of a site and its larger setting.  Once the extent and magnitude of contaminant migration are understood through sampling and laboratory analysis, human and ecological risks are assessed.

     Risk assessment is a multifaceted process unique to each site.  A risk assessment identifies potential human populations and organisms at risk of exposure to the contaminants.  Federal and State environmental regulatory agencies have developed conservatively protective, risk-based maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for a variety of generic human and ecological exposure scenarios. 

     Cleanup of contamination is generally not required if site contaminant levels are less than applicable generic, risk-based MCLs.  If contaminant levels are greater than generic MCLs, then cleanup may be necessary.  Complex sites often require site specific human and ecological risk assessments to develop site specific MCLs, which become the  cleanup (protective) goals unique to the site.
